Music Hyper-fixation List
Just like every other list I've made but now it's songs
I know most of the content I’ve put on this blog has literally just been lists of things I like but honestly it’s kind of all I’ve had the time and energy to write recently. So here is most likely the final one for a while at least.
Same deal as the Reading and Watchlists just for music, and I tend to hyper-fixate on like 2-3 songs over a few weeks until I find another one to almost “replace” my previous hyper-fixation. I’m not really the kind of person who listens to albums or even a certain artist specifically, I just have songs that I like and I listen to those. (That sounds so stupid written out like that but that’s how I can explain it lol). I tend to find music mostly from soundtracks, the internet/social media and friends and I LOVE when people send me songs.
Anyways,
Needle in the Hay + Between the Bars by Elliott Smith
Listen to Needle in the Hay Here
Listen to Between the Bars Here
Okay my younger sister might have gotten me into Elliott Smith… I’m not embarrassed.
Honestly I’m happy we have some things in common now, because Elliott Smith is so awesome and so up my alley I can’t believe I only started listening to him now.
I’ve been listening to more than just these two songs but they’re probably my favourites at the moment.
He does this really cool rhyming style in Needle in the Hay that just makes it tickle my brain in a very good way.
Also, I think I’ve actually loved that song for a while because it’s in one of my favourite movie The Royal Tenenbaums. You can watch the scene here.
AND his music is all up in Good Will Hunting. I guess I watched these movies too early, I’m sure if I had seen them recently these songs would’ve been immediately added to my Library.
Between the Bars by Elliott Smith in Good Will Hunting.
Miss Misery by Elliott Smith in Good Will Hunting. (was nominated for an Oscar)
Angeles by Elliott Smith in Good Will Hunting.
Say Yes by Elliott Smith in Good Will Hunting.
I highly recommend giving him a listen. I feel like he’ll my fixation for a while.
He really just feels like some dude making music. He’s really good at it.
He sadly died on my first birthday. An unconfirmed suicide or murder.
Vampire Empire by Big Thief
Okay I guess I am a Big Thief fan? I still only know a couple songs but I find them all so addictive…
Found this song through these Instagram videos of like fruit being stop motion eaten? Idk, pretty weird but also weirdly appealing.
I can’t link it for some reason, but here’s a screenshot.
Bridges and Balloons by Joanna Newsom
I recently stumbled across Joanna Newsom’s music for the first time and was, well, intrigued. It’s very interesting, her voice almost sounds forced and even borders “annoying” but as I kept listening I developed an appreciation for it. Her music isvery unique, definitely a taste I have started to aquire. This song makes me feel so warm and nostalgic. Her lyrics are so interesting I feel like that I’d have to spend a lot of time de-coding them to fully understand the song. She’s a harpist and wow I honestly love the harp now, it fits so perfectly with her style. This song has been on automatic repeat and I’ve listened to it five times today.
Fun Fact: She’s been married to Andy Samberg since 2013 and they had two kids!

Come Downstairs and Say Hello by Guster
This song is pretty interesting and changes around the 2 min mark. I found it on one of my favourite Instagram pages @trackstarshow (I’m embarrassed to say I only recently understood their Instagram name. Tracks like music tracks. I was like why would this have anything to do with running.). This song just makes me feel good and kinda warm/nostalgic. Been a hyper-fixation for a few days and will probs be for a while. If I was good at making those cute little videos I would do one of my fourth year to this song.
Masterpiece by Big Thief
I don’t listen to much Big Thief but this recently joined my library to keep Paul company. A good song to listen to on my way to class.
Lover, You Should’ve Come Over by Jeff Buckley
Such a sad an beautiful song. Jeff Buckley also sadly passed away quite young, which to me makes his music special in a way. He also has a great version of Hallelujah.
Harness Your Hopes (B-side) by Pavement
This is not a new song, it’s a very old song, and I didn’t even just start listening to it (although I’ll shamefully admit I think I did find it on TikTok during the days I was on the app (I’m not on the app, have I mentioned that? Yeah wrote basically a whole blog post about it)) but for some reason it has been stuck in my head for the past few days. And I don’t mean like I’m idling singing it in in my head, it is literally on constant repeat. I want to sing this song for the first time, but I can’t.
The music video is kinda cool, it was made like last year or something and Sophie Thatcher stars in it (she’s in YellowJackets if you’ve seen that) and she’s pretty cool but maybe I just don’t find her as edgy as they make her seem? No shade towards her, but yeah I think I could have made a better video, not that she even made it, with my practically non-existent video-making experience.
I did almost make a Hunger Games remake with the kids on my street when I was a kid, maybe if I’d done that I’d have a short film by now. Could’ve been a whole different person.
It’s a cool song, my description is all over the place but I figured I’d rather it be messy than not blog it at all.
Take It On Faith by Matt Mays
Clay Pigeons by Michael Cera
I know that there’s an original version of this song by Blaze Foley but I love the Michael Cera version. This song has been in an out of my rotation for almost a year so you know I really love it.
(just a disclaimer I know there’s only two three many songs on here right now. I’m starting this with what I listened to on the way to class today because that’s kind of what gave me the idea (/motivation to write it down, I had been thinking about it for a while). Now that I’ve made this page I can come in and just update it with my current favs. so yeah)
